Primary Internal and External Risk Factors †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Primary Internal and External Risk Factors. Answer: Introduction The workplace is definable as the place where work is done such as companies, shops, and construction sites. Such workplaces there are always very many issues such as risk and hazards that occur to the employees (Smith, 2015). Hazards are agents that pose potential harm to an individual in a workplace while risk is the probability of an individual to face and exposed hazard in a work environment. The process of identifying the potential risks refers to as risk assessment (Lathrop Ezell, 2017). Most of the dangers that occur in workplaces include, fire, falling, injuries from the machines (Fonseca Duaute, 2014). Safety and Risk Management is a requirement in every organization and construction sites. The uncertainty of the accidents calls for proper procedures and implementation of the laid down policies. . Many organizations tend to run away from or assume any accident experienced in the premise. The article analyzes risk and hazards that happened in a construction place through ou tlining how safety policies get breached, how to resolves such hazards, what could have been done differently to prevent the accident and a personal approach to the situation. Accidents are uncertain events and are paramount to our everydays life, such as in homes and workplaces. Proper strategies and methods should be put in place to avoid and address accidents in case of their occurrences through a process known as Safety and risk management .Safety and risk management is a systematical method of understanding, analyzing and discussing such foreseen risks and coming up with proper ways to avoid their occurrences. (Goerlandt et al., 2015)There are common international standards constructed to control and address the most common hazards that may occur in construction sites. The commonly used standards in safety and risk management include; International Standard Organization (ISO 31000), which is a codified risk management and mandated to oversee that all construction companies observe all the principles and procedures to the latter during management of risks. China Ocean Shipping Company (COSO 2004) and Oregon Government Ethics Commission (OGEC 2009) Is a commission that is tasked by the government about accountability to provide ethics to the shipping companies Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) mandated to provide the general view on the hazards related to chemicals in a workplace (Hawkers, 2014). Globally there are a large number of construction firms that are less concerned with the safety and risk management leading to a large number of employee accidents reported. The most common of accidents in the construction industry include; tripping accidents accounting for about 38.8% of the total accidents in the Construction Company (Kasprowicz, 2017). About 9.6% of deaths in the construction company results as workers stuck between machines and objects. Electric shock accounts to about 8.6% of the total deaths experienced in the construction company, the use faulty and unmaintained machines account for 7.8%, while noise hazards, hazards caused by harmful and corrosive chemicals ( Carisson et al., 2010). The study shows that death rate in Construction sites is higher than the average of all industries making it very essential for the employers and employees to take control of safety and risk management procedures. These systems provided by Construction Health Risk Working Group, CONIAC, and it ensures that every policy is observable by every construction engineer and if not, it awards proper punishment. The laid down policies are very many for example no employees are expected to catch the disease as a result of the kind of work done. From the previous accidental and death reports, more than 100 people are likely to die when exposed to prolong health hazard at the workplace or slip due to wrong tile, or material used (Zhao, 2014). It is mandatory for the employer to check and control the health of the workers and advising them accordingly, failure of which the company would be charged, fined and even imprisoned for a lifetime when found guilty of the safety breach. The incident discussed was an accident that occurred at a road and construction site known as Fine Roads Company, FRC. On 10th December 2010, while road construction was going on, Kevin Ragnarok, who was a truck driver in the company got an accident while was on duty. On a fateful day, Kevin was transporting gravels to a disposal site; unfortunately, the truck was unable to make a stop and landed into a valley resulting to Kevin death. The unfortunate incident left the family in grieve as the widow could not take care of the three children Kevin left behind since FRC had blocked all Kevins financial benefits. As a result of Kevins wife, Cathrine decided to seek indulgence from the court and Safety, Health Organization. The court ordered for an investigation on the accident to make a judgment. From the police investigations, it was conclusive that FRC breached the safety and risk policy that led to Kevins death. It came out that on a fateful morning; Kevin had filed a report with the Transport Manager of the truck mechanical problem, such as loosened break and poor status of the tiles that were exhausted. Unfortunately, Transport Manager, Mr. Wairiako dismissed Kevin as being lazy and does not feel to work on that day. Mr. Wairiako further stated to Kevin that, the truck service would only be possible in a weeks time; therefore, Kevin had no option but to use the vehicle within the poor state. Because of the heavy load, and the poor grip of the tiles, the truck could not make a stop leading it to lose control and overturn. From the investigations, police realized that other trucks and machines were in a poor status, thus placed the lives of the employees to health risk such as muscular constraints, the worker did not have protective wears such as helmets and gumboots which means they were prone to any falling or sharp object. The court resolved that FRC should compensate Kevins family by paying a penalty of $ 46,500 due to the breach of safety risk. Though the compensation would not entirely replace Mr. Kevin from the heart of the family, it was an easy way of showing some remorseless and served as an example to other companies that neglected the safety issues. The company was also suspended for one year to acquire good trucks and machines that will not put the lives of their workers into danger. What could have been done to avoid the safety breach and personal stand It is miserable that the accident occurred and yet it was something that was much avoidable if FRC management team was responsible. The Transport Manager did not oversee the responsibilities of checking and maintain the conditions of the trucks and other machines. Mr. Wairiako further failed to listen to the issues that were presented by the truck operator, Mr. Kevin hence. Had all these been done, Mr. Kevin would still be with the family. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, 34% of the road accidents attributed to mechanical failure (Yu et al., 2016). So it is very critical to focus on the status of the vehicles before driving it using it in any way. The most mechanical failures are the failure of tires and wheels such as the tire blowouts and worn tires, which accounts for about 30%. The blow-out can happen due to worn-out tire and over or under-inflated that reduces the ability of the driver to take control of the vehicle (Grote, 2012). The worn out tires tens to lose tread hence compromises the grip on the ground during bad weather seasons, hence the car becomes less responsive and takes more distance to brake. Replacing the worn out tires and maintaining the optimal tire pressure and checking the tire alignment are ways of preventing the mechanical failures in the roads (Smith, 2017). According to the reports, 22% of the traffic accidents result from the brake failures that commonly contribute to the faulty brake lines as a result of brake fluid drainage (Gharaie et al., 2015).Antilock Brake System (ABS) that is designed to prevent the wheels from locking up automatically when the driver hits the brake very hard, it also prevents slipping and loss of control. Brake failure can allude to the worn out pads and disc that are meant to stop a vehicle within a shorter distance when the driver presses the brake. When the vehicle fails to stop within a short distance, then there is a high probability of an accident occurring (Stella Anthony, 2017). Preventing accidents caused by such mechanical problems calls for regular vehicle maintenance and inspection of the brake system. Other common mechanical problems are such as failure of steering due to an unbalanced suspension that results to lose control of the vehicle by the driver and low visibility conditions during nighttime and foggy seasons making it harder to see the approaching vehicles (Yang et al., 2012). It is notable that employees are the core of every business organization and therefore it is very critical for the management to ensure that the workplace is very useful and satisfactory for the employees ( Ha Kang, 2015). The manager should always review the policies to keep them updated with the changing times. Therefore, proper equipment should always be selected and maintained, and suggestions should be encouraged from the staff. In case of an accident, the manager should carry out a proper investigation to ascertain the cause and make an appropriate action such as compensating the victim to avoid any legal tussle, and in any case, the manager can prove to the court that the company has a positive attitude towards the health and safety policies. The investigations help the manager to know the areas of the security breach, and take corrective measures to prevent future occurrences; the investigation also provides information to the insurer of the company to make proper compensation. The manager also should encourage all employees to report any sigh of hazard to more than one authority and make a follow-up to any address of the issues. Conclusion In conclusion, the management has to ensure the safety of all employees in the workplace. The management is entitled to see the premise conforms to the policies of the Building and Construction Authority and the Health and Risk Organization. In a case of any negligence of the safety and risk awareness to the employees such as providing poorly maintained machines, or exposing the workers to risk due to lack of protective wears and any other person within the premise, then the engineer should be held responsible and used as an example to others. Policies and procedures must be in a written form and communicated to the employees as frequent as possible, and any risk issue raised by an employee should be well considered and addressed immediately. Employees are also required to take responsibility by avoiding risks as much as possible, and should not engage themselves with faulty machines therefore frequent risk assessment is essential and will help in preventing such mare accidents in th e workplace. Nationalists Essays - Politics, Indian People, South Africa

Nationalists Nationalists The extent to which Nationalists should pursue their goals is a complex issue. The possible changes as well as the losses must be weighed. There is a myriad of complex issues surrounding the situation. Without Nationalists making changes, Italy would not be unified, Apartheid would still exist in South Africa, and many other changes would not have occurred on this planet. I believe that Nationalists should try to solve their problems and get what they want without using violence as a tool. Guseppe Mazzini was a major factor in the unification of Italy. He started his fight for unity with non-violent means. He tried wearing black clothing to mourn the persecuted, and he attempted to educate the people about the dangers of foreign rule in Italy. Gradually however he escalated to more violent means of getting his way. He stirred feelings of Nationalism, brotherhood and religion. In 1848 he started a revolution in Rome. The Pope was forced to flee the city, and Mazzini established a Roman Republic. The entire republic was built upon the one-time rage of the masses. Mazzini simply stirred the emotions of the people, but they didnt really feel that strongly about it. The population of Rome didnt care enough to fight for the retention of the city. The French were easily able to re-take the city, and return it to the Pope. Mahatma Gandhi represents the other side of the spectrum, throughout his life he used only non-violent means to get what he wanted. His main goal was to get Moslems and Hindus to live peacefully together. He was quoted as saying All religions are almost as dear to me as my Hinduism. One instance of his attempts to use non-violent means to accomplish his goal was his two hundred and thirty-kilometer march to the ocean in order to extract salt illegally. This was in protest of Britains salt monopoly in India. Other non-violent acts that he used as tools to persuade the government to listen to his goals were his six to twenty-one day fasts. At one time Gandhi used a fast to force his release from prison. The prison would have been held responsible for his death and would have major pressure put on it to close down. Gandhi had become such a hero to the population that, if the government allowed him to die due to starvation, he would become a martyr. The South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandella is another testimony to the ability to use non-violent methods in order to fight for Nationality. He wanted to do away with apartheid in the area. In 1952 he helped to organize the Nonviolent Defiance Campaign. This was obviously nonviolent in nature, and was an extremely helpful tool in the abolition of apartheid. In 1964 he was tried for treason, and received a sentence of life imprisonment. He was released in 1988, and ran for Prime Minister of South Africa, and won. His struggle came to represent the goal of freedom for Blacks in South Africa. He accomplished all of this without using any violence at all. Each of the preceding Nationalists success was based on the violence that was used in their quests. If someone fights for what they believe in, using violence as a tool they will fail. The people supporting him will want his leadership simply because he is strong, not smart. The masses will lose support of their leader as soon as they realize that he is not as strong as they think. The only right way to go about nationalism is using nonviolent techniques. The ends do not justify the means. Tavis Dowling

The Presentation of Women in To Kill a Mockingbird Research Paper Example

The Presentation of Women in To Kill a Mockingbird Research Paper Example The Presentation of Women in To Kill a Mockingbird Paper The Presentation of Women in To Kill a Mockingbird Paper Essay Topic: Literature To Kill a Mockingbird Women were very much idealised in the southern society. They were regarded as pure and delicate. They were said to be fragile and unfit to deal with real life situations. In theory, this is meant as a high status, but women found it very offensive and extremely restrictive. This made them become very frustrated, and in general, they became depressed. The whole southern community had feelings of frustration, but they women suffered more. Southern women suffered simply because they were women, and because they could convey and express such feelings. In To Kill a Mockingbird a recurrent theme is Scouts hatred of the gracious, ladylike, well-mannered role which her aunt tries to inflict upon her. Scout rejects her feminine ways and name of Jean -Louise, and prefers her male nickname, Scout. The fact that the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, is female is an advantage to the presentation of women in the novel because she would know how it feels to be a woman in those times, and she would know how they are being treated. Harper Lee was a young writer in South America, she was born in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama which was a small South American town, which in a way resembles Maycomb, the town in which To Kill a Mockingbird is set, although in an interview, Harper Lee maintained that To Kill a Mockingbird was intended to portray not her own childhood home but a rather non specific southern town. People are people, wherever you put them, she declared. The novel is also said to be firmly based on Harper Lees background. In this essay, I am going to discuss the female characters in the novel, the womens position within the Maycomb society and the womens influence on the novel as a whole. Jean Louise Finch, also known as, Scout is a very important female character in the novel. She competes with Jem and their coloured cook Calpurnia for the attention of her father Atticus. She has a very loving relationship with Atticus, and she gives Jem the status of her hero, although they do not always get on as well as expected. Scout is observant and in ways, very confident. She doesnt always understand everything that she is told, or sees happening, although she demonstrates an ability to absorb things, as she is a very intelligent, young girl. She is a non-judgemental child who is able to have lots of fun and is always happiest in her overalls, instead of typical girly dresses. She has the social identity of a tomboy in the prim and proper world of Maycomb. Scout is a very thoughtful girl, she worries about the goodness and evil of mankind and she always acts with the best intentions at heart, although she sometimes goes about things the wrong way. As the novel progresses, Scout grows up a lot, although it is only in the space of 3 years, she matures a great deal. At the beginning of the novel, Scout is an innocent, good-hearted 5 year old, who has had hardly any experience with the big, wide world and by the end of the book, though she is still only a young child, her perspective on life progresses from the innocent child, to a near grown up. She has her first contact with evil in the form of racism when her father Atticus is called a Nigger Lover. She reacts badly to this incident and takes it to heart. Atticus brought up Scout with an element of sympathy and understanding and this indicates that whatever evil she comes face to face with she will retain her conscience without becoming cynical. Scouts mother died when Scout was only 2 years old, so her father, Atticus, who is a big role model in her life, brought her up. However, the two main female role models in her life are Calpurnia, the coloured cook who lives with the Finch family and Miss Maudie, who is like a best friend to the children. Scout grows up with Calpurnia, and although they do not really get on at first, by the end of the novel Scout looks up to Cal. They form more of a relationship where Scout enjoys spending time with her. Miss Maudie is the other main female role model for Scout. She is an old, yet very good friend of the family. She shares Atticus passion for justice and agrees in the way he brought up Scout and Jem. Miss Maudie is like a mother figure to Scout, who in a way replaces Scouts real mother. Out of all the adults in Maycomb, Miss Maudie is like the childrens best friend, apart from Atticus of course. Miss Maudie Atkinson, a widow in her late forties, is a very good friend of the Finch family. She is well loved by the whole of the family, especially the children. She is always out working in her garden, and is a source of company and information to the children. In a way, I think that Scout and Jem both admire her. She is a very positive character in the novel and a big role model. She is very courageous and has a good, fun sense of humour. She has a non racist attitude, which Scout, especially admires. You can tell that she isnt racist as she stands by Atticus through the Tom Robinson case. I think that Miss Maudie gets along with everyone or at least tries too. She has an amount of respect for all living things. Scout has a very high opinion of Miss Maudie, as said before; she is one of Scouts main role models. She has a lot of wisdom about her, which helps Scout a lot through the novel. She is a mother-like figure to the children, she does not talk down to them, she has respect for them, which is why they respect and value her. She a constant reassuring and sensible model for the children when Atticus is not around. When her house burns down, she shows a tremendous amount of strength and resilience. Miss Maudie and the children often have very in-depth conversations together about what Arthur Radley was like when he grew up, rigid religion and of Atticus talent. Scout and Miss Maudie are in a way, very alike. They have the same views on life, which is why I think they get along so well, even though Scout is only young. The both disapprove of racism and prejudice. Neither of them really have the desire to gossip. Scout has a very high opinion of Miss Maudie, which I think influences the reader to have the same type of opinion of her. As the novel goes on, you get to know Scout as a person, and in a way, learn to love the people she love one being Miss Maudie Atkinson. Calpurnia is the black cook and housekeeper that lives in the Finch family household. She is quite a strong character in the novel. She experiences better conditions and responsibilities, than other African Americans of her time, due to Atticus belief. She is very able to negotiate between the two very different, separate worlds of Maycomb the black and the white. She teaches Scout and Jem most of the same lessons which they are taught by Atticus and Miss Maudie. She is quite a strict lady, and as she is considered as one of the family, she is allowed to freely scold and lecture the children. At first, the children, especially Scout do not like this, but as the novel progresses I think they realise that she is only doing her best for them. Cal and Scout bond quite a lot through the novel, they sit and talk, and Calpurnia teaches Scout about keeping respect for people, and taking time to understand others. I think that this helps Scout to build quite a strong relationship with Cal. Having such a close relationship with Calpurnia even helps Scout see that being a girl isnt so bad after all, and despite being coloured and just the Finchs cook and housekeeper, she becomes a type of mother to Scout in many ways. Miss Henry Lafayette Dubose is one of the more nasty characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. She is said to be one of the meanest women to ever have lived in the Maycomb County. Se is a very old, ill and argumentative woman. She is racist and prejudiced which is a dominating reason of why the children dislike her, as neither of them have been brought up to be like that. The children tend to avoid her, as she is a viscous woman, and it upsets them, the way she calls Atticus a Nigger Lover because of his Tom Robinson case and having Calpurnia living with them. One day, when Mrs Dubose calls Atticus a Nigger Lover it particularly gets to the children, and inspires Jem to cut off Mrs Duboses precious Camellias. As a punishment for this Jem has to go to read to Mrs Dubose everyday. Jem hates the idea but Scout offers to go with him (this is an aspect of Scout and Jems close relationship). The children are scared to go there everyday, but Atticus tells them to maintain their politeness with her, as she is just an ill, lonely lady. They also learn more courage as they are going to visit everyday. Having Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose as a character in the novel, indicates that there are both good and bad characters in the book. Harper Lee has realistically created complex personalities. Alexandra referred to in the book as Aunt Alexandra is Atticus sister. She is a very strong-willed, proud woman, and is very devoted to her family and her expectations of them. She is like the perfect southern woman. She is a very traditional woman, and personality trait often leads her to clash with Scout. She has strict views on how children should be brought up, and girls should be typical girls, so she disapproves of Scouts tomboyish ways. She tries to enforce these views on Scout, which drives Scout away from her, as Scout is happy the way she is and the way she dresses. Alexandra is very much concerned with bringing up Atticus children properly, this shows when she comes to help look after the children during the Tom Robinson trials. She is quite a racist woman, which does not help when she is staying with Atticus and the children, as Calpurnia is the cook. She has very different views to Calpurnia on bringing up the children and the roles of southern women. This makes it quite hard for them to live in the same household and causes them a lot of tension, as they tend to clash, as they are very different. Scout and Aunt Alexandra build a better relationship towards the end of the novel, they realise they arent so different after all, and rather learn to get along. They learn to live with each other and accept each others rules and views. I think that there are many strong female characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. One of the strongest being Scout. She changes a lot through the novel, we get to know her really well, and notice her changes from a small child into more of a person. The role of southern women is a big aspect of the story. It is shown in many ways, from the way Calpurnia is, and the way Aunt Alexandra is.

A review in light of the policy concerns Term Paper

A review in light of the policy concerns - Term Paper Example The share of federal budget awarded to each State corresponded with the rise in cases their respective welfare systems had to deal with, leaving no incentive for the States to consider curtailing the number of cases. Thus, amidst growing dissent, Clinton signed the aforementioned Act into effect in August 1996. Nickel and Dimed portrays the deficiencies of this system. While there is an obvious incentive for unskilled but able-bodied idlers to seek work and support their families themselves albeit at minimum wage, such incentive has little to offer as Ehrenreich, as a result of her practical experiments in Florida, Maine and Minnesota proves that wages tend to be minimum while work is all the more labor intensive, resulting in her being unable to save enough at the end of the month and struggle to put forth next month’s rent (Ehrenreich, 2001). In the case of a health emergency, she would find herself in a quagmire of financial difficulties. This can be relaxed by policy measu res at the hands of the government in favor of awarding free health care to those who are honest contributors to society but fall within a relaxed income bracket, while still encouraging them to work. Ehrenreich’s belief regarding her skin color may be warranted by the notion that racism is particularly strong when the individuals dealing with each other both belong to a different class. If an upper class citizen deals with a lower class poverty line worker earning minimum wage, certain precepts come into play that have become part of the moral dilemma within American societies.

Applied Research Skills - E commerce Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Applied Research Skills - E commerce - Essay Example In relation to customer relationship management (CRM), this study will first discuss e-commerce technology can be used in creating a good customer service followed by discussing how to use e-commerce in order to communicate effectively and be able to balance online and human interaction in order to maximize the clients’ trust and loyalty. Using e-commerce technology, the customer relationship management (CRM) combined with the use of e-loyalty programs help online businesses create a stronger long-term relationship with its target customers. Business-to-business (B2B) or e-biz is an effective tool in the exchange of products, services, and information between business and consumers. Over the years, B2B has proven to be very effective in closing business transactions between the business owner and the customers. According to a study that was published back in early 2000, the profitability of using B2B has exceeded the ‘e-tailing’ by 10 to 1% and is expected to have an annual growth of 41% over the next few years (Jones, 2001). In general, the tight competition web markets contribute to a lot of challenges in the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and e-loyalty when it comes to maintaining brands online (Ragins & Greco, 2005). The most important challenge that online companies have is to build a solid customer loyalty rather than expanding the online channels of the company. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a ‘software’ that helps a business organization in managing its customers better (Anderson & Stang, 2000). CRM software enables the sales people and service representatives to have a quick access over the information related to the customers. This allows the sales force of the company to immediately provide the customers with a more customized service according to the customers’ needs regarding the products and services the business is offering

Fight Club :: essays research papers

The Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, constructs an underground world of men fighting with one and other to find the meaning to their lives. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are the main characters who start the fight club. They make a set of rules in which everyone must follow. The fight club exists because individuals get weighted down by possessions causing them to miss the deep meaning of life. Most of the people in the fight club hold service jobs or lower level management jobs that are meaningless. Society becomes so rationalized that one must push themeself to the extreme in order to feel anything or accomplish anything. The more you fight in the fight club the tougher and stronger you become. Getting into a fight tests who you are. No one helps you so you are forced to see your weaknesses. The film celebrates self-destruction and the idea that being on the edge allows you to be beaten becuase nothing really matters in your life. Ed Norton is the main character in the beginning. He has a meaningless job and he has to go to support groups to feel anything. There he meets Marla, a woman who does the same as him; they are both addicted to support groups. He then meets Brad Pitt. Pitts character forces Norton's character to see that life is meaningless and they begin the fight club. It starts in the basement; it is in confines and is completely regulated. It then shifts to cultural anarchy of vandalism and attacks. Then the members have to pick a fight and lose. The idea of the fight club spreads and becomes like an army and the members become militant. The members no longer "take it out" on each other, they take it out on everyone. The idea of the fight club becomes facist and Tyler becomes like Hitler. It turns out that Norton and Pitt are the same person, they are Tyler Durton. Norton represents the average man in America at a meaningless job, feeling like there is no reason for his existance. Pitt represents the force which makes Norton realize that there is no meaning to life and he must push to the extreme to feel anything and to accomplish anything. Marla is the only woman in the movie and she is used to show that the idea of women fighting is a ridicule where as the idea of men fighting is celebrated.

Influences to Become an Ik Essay

In Lewis Thomas’s essay â€Å"The Iks†, the Iks are described as cruel and detestable human beings. Iks grew up in their own ideal society as nomadic hunters and gatherers, but were soon forced to change into farmers on a poor hillside soil. After that, the Iks created their own views of how society acts to defend their self in their unworkable environment. The Iks treat their children as labor workers because they are put to work once they are able to walk. They desert their elders to starve and the children steal their food. The Iks breed without love or care for each other, which makes the breeding seem like a way to just increase their population. The only joy they get from life is by laughing at other people’s misfortune. Another bad quality they have is that they defecate on other people’s doorsteps. The Anthropologists believe that the Iks are cruel and detestable characters. However, Thomas believes that the Iks became who they are by copying that behavior from other groups. I agree that everyone has Ik characteristics from the influence of others. For everyone to have inner Ik characteristics, it would have to be from the influence of others. As Thomas states, â€Å"Cities have all the Ik characteristics†(82). Cities are a big influence because everyone watches or reads news about how they treat each other and others. They portray Ik characteristics on themselves or others. Thomas states that cities have the same qualities as Iks because they also have greedy and heartless characteristics, and they could have been an influence on the Iks. Cities portray Ik characteristics on their own or on others. The people living in the cities desert their elders in a less harsh sounding way, by sending them to senior centers. Senior centers are similar to deserting elders because one pays another to take care of their elders, so they do not have to deal with them. Cities also laugh at other people’s misfortune. In addition, cities also defecate on other properties. They ways that they defecate on themselves are by littering. People litter all over the environment, where the cities had to take action and create laws that would punish those who litter. To show a cleaner environment to others, rules are made to stop people who do not care about the environment. In addition, Thomas says, â€Å"No wonder the Iks seem familiar. For total greed, rapacity, heartlessness, and irresponsibility there is nothing to match a nation†(82). A nation strives to protect themselves and for other nations to respect their area. However, war is a big factor on how the Iks are cruel to others. There is only fighting and distain between the nations that are in war with each other. For example, â€Å"†¦editorials in every American and European newspaper and magazine of note adding to this vocabulary of gigantism and apocalypse, each use of which is plainly designed to inflame the reader’s indignant passion as a member†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (105). This shows that the news is a big factor on how the citizen of the nation acts. If the news says how despicable one country is, then all the citizens would believe the same and act angrily towards them. All these characteristics are ways that influence how the Iks act towards each other in their own society. Thomas’s ideas are true because people grow and change from watching the actions of others. Especially, with how they were treated and forced to change their lifestyle. This rude and forceful way of changing them are also factors in the Ik character. People hold Ik like characteristics from different kinds of entertainment and how others typically react to it. The only enjoyment Iks get in life is from laughing at other peoples’ misfortune. This is portrayed in current society through the media, such as movies or television shows. Recently I watched the movie Jackass 3D because my friend went to go see it. This movie directly relates to how Iks get enjoyment from other peoples troubles. The whole movie was about a group of guys doing stupid and harmful activities to make the audience laugh. The movie did bring some laughter out of the audience, but there were also scenes that were shocking or displeasing to watch. However, the whole point of the movie was the make the audiences laugh by watching their misfortune. There are also video clips on YouTube with similar concepts. Even though people in the videos get seriously injured or die, there are still people that find enjoyment from watching it. These are all characteristics that can influence others to hold the same characteristics as the Iks. As Thomas believes, the Iks would have to have some sort of influence to become the way they are. Overall, I agree with Thomas that the Iks were influenced by some outer group to become the way they are. People grow up with different characters depending on how their society lives and acts towards others. Cities and nations are a big influence to how people act towards one another. They also influence each other on what is funny to laugh at. Without the influence of others, movies like Jackass 3D would not even be a movie if they did not know that people enjoy laughing at their stupid activities. In addition, the Iks were treated badly by the people that forced them to change their lifestyle. These traits are the sorts of ideas that give people Ik characteristics.
